Emergency Relief: Health Camps in flood ravaged delta region of Tamil Nadu

Heavy torrential rains in November unleashed floods in many parts of Tamil Nadu. The State’s southern districts bore the brunt of the Northeast monsoon’s fury; with Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam the worst hit. The situation was aggravated by concurrent breaches in river embankments. The raging floods rendered thousands homeless, collapsing or submerging houses, killing cattle, destroying crops, and washing away household stocks.

Isha Community Care centre celebrates World AIDS day

On the eve of World AIDS day Isha Outreach organized a mass awareness meet for 1500 students. The program was held in Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Palladam. Students from Government Girls High school and Blue Bird matriculation Higher secondary school also participated.

Suzlon Foundation and Project GreenHands continue to strive together towards mitigating Climate Change

A Climate Change mitigation program through tree plantation was launched on October 5th at Kittampalayam village of district Coimbatore with the support of Suzlon Foundation. The project aims to create a mindset among the stakeholders, particularly the farmers, that the agroforestry model of tree plantation is a potential source of livelihood and also a way out of environmental degradation.

Launch of Urban Greening Movements

October 2010
Project GreenHands launched Urban Greening Movements in sixteen cities of Tamil Nadu. A rally preceded the launch in each city. Hundreds of students, volunteers and public marched through the major areas shouting slogans and displaying banners to promote environmental conservation. Volunteers also distributed saplings and awareness pamphlets.

Isha Outreach and You See join hands together

Isha Outreach and the Hyderabad based YOU SEE signed an agreement to undertake a pilot project to link a results-based, Post Pay Philanthropy funding model with the Mobile Health Clinic services provided by Isha Outreach. The pilot focuses on recovering operating costs of one of the Mobile Health Clinics at Chennai for a period of 3 months starting October 2010. You See has also supported Isha to strengthen its monitoring and evaluation to showcase results and pinpoint health trends in over 40 slum neighborhoods of Chennai. The purpose of this effort is to promote the mobile health services and interest donors in a supporting successful program based on documented results. Isha operates 13 such mobile clinics in over 700 communities throughout Tamil Nadu.

ARR profiled in Commonwealth games Coffee Table Book

October 2010
Isha received Special Mention in ‘Changing Lives through the Power of Sports’, a 120 page coffee table book published by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and UNICEF India. The book was released on the occasion of the 2010 Commonwealth Games hosted in New Delhi to project the power of sports as a tool for development at the grassroots level throughout Asia. State Ministers and VIPs attending the Games received copies of the book that highlights the initiatives of dozens of NGOs and individuals promoting youth sports throughout India. UNICEF chose to profile Action for Rural Rejuvenation to illustrate Isha’s success of mobilizing communities toward health and wellness through reviving indigenous games, and included numerous images of Isha volunteers and children playing traditional games in Gobichettypalayam, Erode District.

Alandurai IRHC celebrates second Annual Day

October 2010
Isha Rural Health Clinic (IRHC) at Alandurai celebrated its second annual day on October 10th by organizing a free public medical camp. Dr. Krishnamoorthy, the Chief Director of Shree Lavanya hospital, and sponsors inaugurated the camp. Around 300 rural people were screened for hypertension, anaemia and cardiac diseases using echocardiography and blood examination. High risk groups and newly diagnosed cases received consultation from specialists.

A ‘Kudumbavizha’ family function was organized in the evening. Dignitaries, clinic staff, Isha volunteers and local people gathered to dance to the tunes of Sounds of Isha and see the budding actors of Isha Home School perform drama on ‘Ramayana’ theme. Alandurai IRHC offers quality care at a nominal rate to the rural community. The clinic is well equipped to carry out basic lab investigations, ECG, HIV testing and has daily patient turn out of over 90 patients. It will soon offer dental care.

 

Project GreenHands wins Beyond Sport Award in Chicago

On 30th Sep 2010, Isha’s Project GreenHands (PGH) was awarded the “Sport for Environment” trophy at the annual Beyond Sports Summit, this year hosted in Chicago,U.S.A. Based in the U.K., Beyond Sport promotes, develops and funds the use of sport to create positive social change. A major global initiative, Beyond Sport identifies the world’s most inspirational sporting projects, celebrates their achievements and uses them to inspire others. 2010 saw 381 entries competing among 12 categories in areas such as health, environment, social inclusion, education and conflict resolution. The judges panel, chaired by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and counting Olympic gold medalists and eminent personalities, reviewed 18 projects from the U.S.A, Canada, Switzerland, U.K., Botswana, Israel, Japan, Cuba, India and Kenya competing under the environment category. Isha’s was the only Asian entry to garner a trophy that came with $15,000 and a support package to boost Project GreenHands’ efforts.

 

Support group meeting for Patients Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs)

September 2010
Support group meeting was held for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) and their family members on September 5th at Isha Community Care Centre in Palladam, Tirupur district . About 200 people (including 125 PLHAs) were introduced to yoga practices to reduce stress and enhance physical and mental well being. Medical experts conducted sessions on various aspects of HIV/AIDS to empower the patients with medical knowledge.

To provide them with an avenue to contribute to society, each attendee was encouraged to plant a tree sapling. The guests shared lunch with the participants. The whole event was sponsored by The Rotary Club of Palladam, The Rotary Club of Palladam Rainbow and The Lion’s Club of Palladam. Dr.Mohamad Ali, District Project Manager HIV/AIDS project TANSACS, Mr. Narayanasamy, President of The Lion’s Club of Palladam, Mr. Kanagaraj, President of The Rotary Club of Palladam and Mr. Srinivasan, President of The Rotary Club of Palladam Rainbow were guests of honor; and the event was presided over by Dr. Krishnamoorthy, former Director of Health for the State of Tamil Nadu.

 

IshaOutreach receives Dr.Sanjivi Award

Isha Outreach was awarded Dr.Sanjivi Award, 2010 for institution doing great service to the society for health. The award was presented on Sunday July11th at KMM Arts and Science College at Chennai by Shri.V.K.SubburajI.A.S.,Secretary to Government of India,Health and Family Welfare Department.

The Confederation of Indian Organisations for Service & Advocacy (CIOSA) and UdhavumUllangal had jointly instituted Dr K.S.Sanjivi Award in memory of the late Dr.K.S.Sanjivi, founder of Voluntary Health Service for his dedicated service to his profession and to the community at large. From this year onwards, this award is presented by Ekam Foundation and UdhavumUllangal. The awards are presented annually to the doctors and institutions on Doctors Day, who exemplify Dr.K.S.Sanjivi's ideal of dedication to medicine as a service vocation without compromising professional excellence.

 

Isha received India’s highest environmental award, the prestigious ‘Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar’

Isha Foundation received India’s highest environmental award, the prestigious Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar(IGPP) on World Environment Day 5th June 2010 in New Delhi from the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam during the function organized by Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India at VigyanBhavan, New Delhi in recognition of the outstanding contributions made by its Project GreenHands (PGH) for environmental conservation during 2008. The IGPP also included a cash prize of Rs. Five Lakhs and a silver lotus trophy.

The 7th Rural Olympics

Since 2003, Rural Olympics is being organized every year in Isha project villages as part of Action for Rural Rejuvenation. Isha uses community games as an entry point activity to the villages. Community Games bridge the caste based differences existing in the community and create a platform to introduce other social developmental activities. The preliminary matches of the tournament started in December 2009 and culminated with the finals at Erode. The event was organized entirely by the volunteers. 202 teams from 7 zones participated in this sporting extravaganza.
