Anitha and Indira Experience

Anitha and Indira are two friends studying in 8th standard in Gobichettipalayam Government School in Erode District, Tamil Nadu. Being farmers’ daughter, they both know that water resource is becoming a dramatic concern for the sustainability of agriculture in their area and have already understood that in a near future it will mean a direct threat on their parents’ ability to sustain their farming activity.

They also understand that a lower income for their family may jeopardize the possibility for them to study in college and get worried about that.

After attending an awareness program run by Project GreenHands, they learn that planting trees is the simplest act that all can do in order to counteract the degradation of natural resources. Following the program, Anitha and Indira have lobbied within the school to mobilize both school children and school staff to set a school tree nursery as Project GreenHands was suggesting.

Thanks to the commitment of the children, the nursery was set in their school and produced 2000 tree sapling by December 2011. With pride, they organize distribution of the sapling for plantation among all the school children giving them the mission to plant the saplings on their parents’ farmland thus raising awareness within their community that all together something can be done for the benefit of all
